About

Gelli Goch has a very rich history, its unclear when the first settlement was made at this site but during renovation work over 25 years ago a piece of wood with the date 1447 carved into it was found. Gelli Goch’s most famous inhabitant is clearly St John Roberts . He’s believed to be a descendant of the Welsh princes, including Maelgwn Gwynedd, Hywel Dda and Llywelyn the Great.

He was arrested as part of the Guy Fawkes plot to bomb Parliament, but was found not guilty and deported

He was hung, drawn and quartered for his beliefs on 10 December, 1610, at 33 years old. It was usual for the prisoner’s innards to be drawn when still alive, but the large crowd which gathered at his execution would not allow this. He was very popular among the poor of London because of the kindness he’d shown them during the plague.

More recently Gelli Goch was a working farm and up to 50 pigs were kept here, the farm also kept several shire horses who worked in the forest, moving and carrying felled timber.

Rhys and Gwyneth Llywelyn, their 2 sons and daughter now live in Gelli Goch. When they set about the project of developing the redundant farm buildings, sustainability and luxury were the two things that mattered to them. From using the finest local materials, using local contractors to ensuring the highest levels of sustainable power and heating, their planning was meticulous. The reward for you is unrivalled levels of luxury with the added piece of mind that your holiday is truly sustainable.

Sustainable living

Our philosophy is a simple one, we do what we can, let others do what they want to do.

We realised that we could make a little bit of a difference, we can’t change everyone’s attitudes.

We enjoy living in rural Wales, the traditions, community and language are important to us as is the wonderful environment in which we live. To enable us to enjoy living here comfortably we are willing to share our little bit of Wales with you.

Rather than exploiting our heritage and environment we want to support it, this is why we’ve gone out of our way to make your holiday as carbon neutral and enjoyable as possible.

High levels of insulation will keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. The water you drink here comes from our well, please use sparingly,  the water for flushing the toilets comes from a rain water harvesting tank.  Underfloor heating is the most efficient way of heating, ours is powered by the earth’s natural heat, via a Ground Source Heat Pump. The water for the baths and showers is heated from the sun and the GSHP. The roof has special solar slates which produce electricity from the sun.  We hope you’ll not notice our efforts, this might make you consider some of these technologies yourself. If you’d like us to show you how it all works, we’d be happy to do so.
